Poetry Unit for 6th Graders

Looking at my stats page, I’ve noticed quite a few searches for teaching poetry. I have no idea what people are specifically looking for, but I had a thought from the distant past. Distant in the idea that I wrote a poetry unit called “The Coffee House” for the 6th grade Core Knowledge curriculum. It was awarded the gold star and labeled as an example for other unit writers. It turned in to a community event for our 6th graders (when I taught sixth grade…way back 3 years ago). Families brought in lamps that we plugged in around the gym. We had a program and each student read a poem that they wrote during the unit. This coincided with the school art show and some brownies. What a great event. I haven’t quite been able to duplicate it at the high school level yet. Anyways, I don’t know if this can help any of you, but you can download the entire unit (with lesson plans) here (pdf).

[EDIT] The link to the lesson plan was not working, but the Core Knowledge website is back up so the link should work again.

  1. Joel,
I passed this on to our two 6th grade teachers.
I’ll let you know if they use or not. One wasn’t sure as he has a student teacher right now.

  2. I’m sorry for the bad link. As it turns out, the lesson plans portion of the website is being redesigned and is unavailable. I don’t know when it will be back. I’ll email it to you! Thanks for the heads up!

  3. Excellent ideas! I’ll be using some or all of this in my 6th grade next year!!!! Thanks!

  4. Thank you for the GREAT Poetry Unit! I will use most of it! Also, Sharon Creech’s website (author of “Love that Dog” which this poetry unit uses) has excellent ideas/resources for teaching poetry. God bless you!!

  5. Thank you so much for posting this. I was struggling to come up with something cool for my kids to do before Spring Break and this was just perfect. I’m going to pass this on to all of my teamates. You are AWESOME!!!

  6. I was in search of a teacher-friendly unit on poetry. Yours is it! With 90 students not sure if I can pull off a “Coffee House”, but can definitely use the unit.

  7. Thank You!!!! I am a homeschool mom and I used this unit a couple of years ago with my son. He loved it. Now my daughter is in 6th and wanting poetry and I could not find my copy. So thank you so much for updating this link.

  8. Thank you very much for this unit!! I am a new teacher this year. I teach Math and English. I have been struggling with the English as my minor is Math. I will be starting this Unit this week! I am very excited and I am going to try to pull off the Coffee house in our Library with the other 6th grade classes to come visit.
I have one question- did you have a book with all the poems that were used? I am looking at the 2nd day and It says the students should look through the poems. I am sure I can put together a small packet of the ones listed in the overview but I was just curious.
    Thanks for your help!

  9. When I taught this unit I had little booklets made for the students. I’m pretty sure you can find all of them online. The coffee House is super fun. I’m even considering modifying it for the high school level. I hope it goes well for you!
